Our survey work

We are carrying out surveys to better understand the local environment and this information will help us define the routing of the proposed underground hydrogen pipeline.

A range of surveys will take place in 2026 and into 2027, including walkover surveys and ground investigations. These surveys will primarily be carried out within the area where the pipeline is being considered, known as the route corridor. You can see the map of the proposed corridor here.

As a result, you may see survey teams working in fields and open land, which are the primary locations for this work, as well as project vehicles on local roads. In certain areas, ground investigation activities will also take place.

For all surveys, we will work with landowners to seek voluntary access. We do not expect to carry out surveys within private homes. If you are a landowner and have any questions, please visit the landowner page for more information.

Walkover surveys

At present, we are undertaking site walkover surveys, which are initial inspections of areas of land. These surveys help to inform the early design and development of the Project. They involve surveyors walking across the land to assess key aspects including ground conditions, habitats, species, water features and existing structures.

Ground investigations

Ground investigation activities involve drilling boreholes and excavating trial pits to assess ground conditions. These activities, known as ground investigation (GI) works, help determine the type of soils and rocks present, as well as monitor water, gas, and vapour conditions within the ground.

These surveys do not indicate that construction has begun. Any construction work will only proceed following the successful outcome of the planning application process, which you can read about here.

Geophysical surveys

Geophysical surveys will be conducted on parts of the preferred route corridor to investigate the potential for buried archaeology. Surveyors will walk across land and use hand held devices that will map below ground structures which could indicate the potential for buried archaeology.
